We at ChairmanPromotions have been using #hashtags for years on both #Instagram and #Facebook but always sparingly on Facebook (Keeping it to under 5). On Instagram it is like the wild wild west with the amount of hashtags used. We have seen anywhere from 5 to 25+ out there. We like to keep it in the range of 10-15 for our clients. The use of hashtags was always something that marketers did for clients because we all hoped that someone out there was going to search for that exact hashtag and then organically we were going to get our clients a higher level of reach.

Finally there has been some high level research to show what should and should not be done as far as #Hashtag use. Thanks to SocialMediaToday for bringing this report to everyone’s attention.

“A 2016 report from Buzzsumo, which analyzed more than a billion Facebook posts from over 30 million brand Pages, came to exactly the same conclusion – posts without hashtags generated more reach than those with tags added.”

#Astonishing right? Who would have thought that Facebook posts without #Hashtags actually reach a higher level of engagement than those with countless hashtags. In the world of organic vs paid traffic, it is a best practice to squeeze out some organic reach every now and then. We do agree with #SocialMediaToday when they reference using #Hashtags specifically for promotions or contests that Business Pages are running as this is an easy way to connect participants and those voting.

So the next time your agency posts on #Facebook, keep an eye on what they are posting because you just might be cutting your organic reach and engagement short..
